What Is Bolection Moulding?
Bolection moulding first appeared in the late 1600s and became common in French interiors throughout the 18th century. Traditionally, bolection profiles were used to frame ornate wall panelling, door panels and cabinetry, as well as mirrors and artwork positioned above fireplaces or doorways.
A bolection mould is rebated on the underside, allowing it to cover the transition between an outer frame and an inset panel. This design lets floating panels move naturally with changes in temperature and humidity, preventing cracking while keeping the panel securely in place.
Today, bolection moulding is widely used to build decorative wall features and wainscoting. Wainscot panelling covers the lower portion of a wall and is often topped with a dado rail or chair rail moulding for a polished finish.
