Lambs Tongue Skirting Boards & Architraves

The Lambs Tongue profile takes its name from the shape of its top edge, a rounded curve that tapers to a point. It’s one of the most familiar mouldings in Australian joinery, having appeared in homes since the colonial era, and it remains a popular choice today for its unfussy, versatile look. Colonial Wall Linings‘ Lambs Tongue range gives colonial cottages, weatherboards and traditional homes alike a skirting and architrave detail that suits almost any interior.

Why This Profile Has Lasted So Long

Compared with the raised, angular ridge of a pointed heritage moulding, Lambs Tongue is far gentler on the eye. Its curved edge softens a room rather than drawing attention to itself, which is part of why it’s turned up in such a wide range of homes over the decades, from simple weatherboard cottages through to more detailed Federation-inspired interiors.

For renovators looking for a traditional period character without an overly formal or ornate result, it’s often the easiest profile to live with. For builders, it’s also one of the most recognisable and easiest to specify, since most trades and clients already know the look.

Built from MDF, Supplied Pre-Primed

The Lambs Tongue range is machined from MDF, valued for its consistency and dimensional stability. On a long run of skirting, that stability is what keeps every joint sitting flush months after installation.

Boards are also supplied pre-primed, so painters aren’t sanding and sealing raw MDF before the topcoat goes on. Between the stable base and the head start on finishing, it’s a moulding that’s designed to make life easier for whoever’s fitting it, not just for how it looks once it’s up.

Where You’ll Find It in a Home

Lambs Tongue shows up throughout a house wherever a soft, traditional line is called for:

  • Running the length of skirting boards in living areas and bedrooms
  • Framing doors and windows as an architrave
  • Sitting alongside dado, picture, and chair rails as part of a broader wall treatment
  • Finishing off panelled or wainscoted walls
  • Detailing built-in joinery, cabinetry, and shelving

Available in three sizes, the profile can be selected to suit different room proportions, ceiling heights and design requirements.

Straightforward to Cut, Fit and Finish

The rounded profile doesn’t ask anything extra of the tradespeople installing it. It mitres cleanly, holds a tight joint at corners, and behaves the way any quality MDF moulding should, so crews can work through it at their usual pace. Once painted, it’s a durable, easy-care finish that stands up well to daily use in a family home.

Where a project calls for solid timber mouldings instead, whether to match an existing feature or for another reason, Colonial Wall Linings also stocks a timber alternative alongside the MDF range.

Installation and Finishing Tips

Seal exposed cut ends before painting and use an interior-grade primer and topcoat suited to MDF, and follow standard fixing practice. A bit of care at this stage keeps the curve of the profile crisp and the finish looking right for years.

Frequently asked questions

It can suit both. The gentler curve suits simple cottage interiors just as comfortably as it does more detailed Federation-style homes, which is part of why it’s remained popular for so long.

The two share a similar rounded curve, but Lambs Tongue tapers to a defined point rather than staying fully rounded, giving it a touch more shape without the sharper, angular detail of a Pointed Heritage profile.

They can, though most projects keep the two proportionate for a consistent look. Our team can advise if you’re considering mixed sizing.

Speak with our team about custom profile matching, further down this page, which can produce a close match to a specific size or an existing moulding you need to replicate.
